The benefits of taking on an apprentice have stacked up for Ian Burton, the owner of Burton & Son Building. Since he employed 21 year old Chris Harrison as an apprentice builder and bricklayer, he has increased his turnover by 25%.

Ian has found the Learning and Skills Council funded Apprenticeship Programme to be so cost effective that he plans to take on more staff this way in the future.

He said "After a trial period I could see just how hardworking and dedicated Chris was so I was keen to snap him up as my apprentice before another employer did. As a small business, I have found employing Chris to be very cost-effective, resulting in vital savings being made."

Apprenticeships are a cornerstone of the LSC's drive to improve the skills of England's workforce. They offer training for existing staff and new recruits in a wide range of areas and there are over 180 different courses offering relevant training designed by business for business.
