Cheshire Builder; Builds Underground Home
Cheshire property developer Huntsmere has been given planning permission for what could be the UK’s most unusual residential development – a three bedroom property to be built entirely underground.
The proposed subterranean home will be in the grounds of a 19th century Victorian property in Altrincham, Cheshire.
The three-bedroom property will be on two floors and include a swimming pool, according to planning consultancy DPP, which advised the developer, Huntsmere, on the proposed development.
The home will be hidden under a new landscaped English garden. Construction is expected to start in 2010 and the property is expected to be marketed at about £2 million.
Chris Oakes of Huntsmere, said: “There are some very sensible and practical reasons for developing down as opposed upwards.”
“The property has very little impact on the surrounding environment; it is easy to heat in winter and to keep cool in summer and by incorporating the highest standards in design solutions the energy demands of the building can be significantly cut. I am confident that this house will become an architectural landmark, albeit one that most people will never see.”
