Multi-million pound boost for Chester-le-Street tenants’ homes
Delighted tenant Paula Gayler has seen her home go from ‘woe home’ to ‘show home’, as part of a multi-million pound improvement programme in Chester-le-Street district.
The brand new housing association, Cestria Community Housing, has launched a massive scheme to modernise customers’ homes with more than 3,000 getting new doors and windows and 1,000 homes getting new boilers and central heating.
The investment is designed to boost customers’ quality of life, by bringing homes up to a high modern standard. In the next two years alone, the association is set to spend almost £11m on doors, windows and £10m on central heating.
Paula was among the first tenants to benefit from new secure doors and double-glazed Upvc windows.
Paula said: “Cestria Community Housing has made a big difference. They have done a wonderful job. Our doors and windows look simply fantastic.
“The work that is being carried out is of such a high standard, I’m sure it will make a lot of people very happy. At first I couldn’t be bothered with all the disruption, but the workmen were very efficient and polite, which made things much easier. We now feel like we are living in a brand new home.”
Paula was given a range of choices in the design used in their home.
Cestria Community Housing was launched this month after 4,500 homes transferred from Chester-le-Street District Council. Tenants voted for transfer in order to see more investment in homes and improved services.
Ian Broughton, Cestria Community Housing’s Chief Executive, said: “We’ve tried to really hit the ground running since transfer. The money we are investing in homes is already having a big impact. As well as the improvements to homes, we are improving estates to the standards tenants have been wanting for years, which the Council just could not afford to do.
“It’s not all just about bricks and mortar, however. Elsewhere, the association is, for example, cracking down on anti-social behaviour and speeding up repair times. There’s still a huge amount to do, but we’ve made a very positive start.”
