East Durham Homes in partnership with District of Easington is introducing a new and improved lettings system called Durham Key Options which will start in April 2008.

The scheme, which aims to make finding a home as simple, fair and open as possible, assesses housing register applicants according to their need and places them in an allocation group.

In the current system applicants wait until EDH contacts them when a suitable property for their group becomes available.

Under the new system EDH will advertise all available properties on a weekly basis in local newspapers, on the internet and at East Durham Homes customer outlets. Applicants will be able to choose which property they are interested in and make a ‘bid’ to let EDH know they want to be considered for that property.

Applicants will have a limited time to place a bid, when the bidding has closed for that week the properties will be allocated to the applicants with the most appropriate allocation group and date of application. Successful applicants will be contacted individually and a full list of all allocations made will be available on the website and in customer outlets.

The new Durham Key Options system is designed to give tenants the power to choose properties they wish to be considered for.

To help applicants with the new system EDH will be holding a number of open days across the District where people can see how properties will be advertised, how to make a ‘bid’ and to answer any queries that people may have on the new system.
