Plumbing Frequently Asked Questions: Combination Boilers
What is a Combination/Combi Boiler?
A Combi Boiler is a packaged unit that replaces a conventional system. It is very attractive from an installation viewpoint in that there is considerably less work involved. It is also attractive from the householders viewpoint in that the package is only slightly larger than a conventional boiler, but does away with the need for cylinder, pump and water storage cisterns. It generates hot water as and when it is needed, avoiding waiting for or running out of it, and eliminating heat loss from a cylinder. The hot water is at mains pressure, which is an advantage for showers.
What makes a Combi Boiler Different From Conventional Boilers?
A combi boiler is a combination of a heating boiler and instantaneous water heater. Hot water is taken straight from the mains, rather then a storage cistern. Contained within the boiler are all the controls required to achieve this function together with a pump and expansion vessel. The expansion vessel absorbs water expansion in the heating system, as is required for a sealed system. A temporary link is provided to connect the heating circuit direct to the mains cold water for the purpose of filling it. This link should not be left permanently in place as it would then be in contravention of the Water Byelaws.
